Interpol alerted on mastermind Subhan

NEW DELHI/AHMEDABAD: Thirty two-year-old techie Abdus Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer alias Taufiq Bilal, the mastermind behind the Indian Mujahideen (IM) terror module, and the man most wanted after Saturday’s blasts, is still at large despite an alert to nab him.
The Mumbai and Gujarat Police, who are now working with the Delhi Police, said Subhan is suspected to be the man behind the e-mails which were sent after the blasts in Faizabad, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Delhi. Mumbai Anti Terrorism Squad additional commissioner Paramvir Singh, who is helping the Delhi Police in the probe said,
“Subhan is the most wanted man. All agencies are coordinating to nab him.”

Delhi Police sources said Subhan is the man who set up the Indian Mujahideen under instructions from the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The terror e-mail sent through unsecured wi-fi connections indicate that IM operates out of Mumbai, Subhan’s hometown. Subhan, considered the IT face of SIMI, is a resident of Mira Road in Mumbai. His dossier with security agencies says he has worked with three different IT companies between 1996 and 2001. In 2001, he resigned from the direct sales team of an IT firm citing “pursue
his religious activity” as reason. He was handpicked up SIMI’s chief Safdar Nagori, who has since been arrested from Indore in March this year.

Subhan’s family still resides at Mira Road but say they have not heard from him for years. He is married and has a two-and-a-half-year-old child. His family also includes three sisters and parents who live in the same house.
Subhan is considered to be the man with extensive knowledge of cyber technology, making it hard for investigators to track e-mails sent by IM. In his last e-mail, Subhan even challenged security agencies by saying: “Far from solving the Ahmedabad bomb blasts case, this imbecile has still not been able to solve the mystery of a simple e-mail from IM that insults you and proves your lack of ability from time to time.”

Subhan’s employers told investigators that he did not require much training when he joined work and was quick on the uptake. Intelligence sources say that Subhan was also part of the SIMI training camps organised in Karnataka, Hyderabad, Gujarat and Mumbai. During these camps, he recruited youths for the IT cell of SIMI and imparted training on how to make bombs with the help of the internet.

Another prime suspect is Qayamuddin (30), whose name cropped up during the interrogation of Mufti Abu Bashar, the cleric arrested for the Ahmedabad blasts. He is said to be an important member of IM and is responsible for holding a number of meetings before the blasts to plan the attacks. He stayed in Ahmedabad for over a month prior to the blasts in the city and is considered second to Subhan in the hierarchy. According to Gujarat Police, Qayamuddin was present in Delhi two days before the blast but managed to give the police the slip.

Some other names which have emerged from terrorists arrested by Ahmedabad Police have been passed on to Delhi Police. They have been identified as Alam, Raqeeb, Afridi and Majid.
