Rating: 3/5

Cast: Gopichand, Anushka, Poonam Kaur, Manoj K Jayan, Ajay, Ali, Dharmavarapu, Krishna Bhagawan, Raghu Babu, Sarath Babu, Tanikella, MS and others
Music: Mani Sharma
Cinematography: Vetri
Director: Siva
Producer: V Anand Prasad
Release Date: September 25, 2008

Story:
A commercial potboiler, the story begins with a major action sequence in Orissa where a bunch of bad guys are pummeled to pulp by a single man. He is none other than Vijay (Gopi) who is on his way to Kolkata and there is a group of bad guys who is desperately following his trail. Meanwhile, Vijay goes and joins in the college and his mission is to get
close to Divya (Poonam) who is also a student there. He is on the lookout for accommodation and in this process he comes across Divya's friend Shweta (Anushka). She tries to rag him but ends up getting ragged and from then on she wants to give him a stick but the reverse happens. Soon, she realizes that she is in love with Vijay but then he is not too responsive to her feelings. Far away in Hyderabad, there is the cruel don Sivaram Goud (Manoj K Jayan) who along with his son (Ajay) is keen on seeing the end of both Divya and Vijay. So what exactly is the reason for his vengeance? Why does Vijay take special interest in Divya? Does he reciprocate the feelings of Shweta or not? All this forms the rest of the story.
Presentation:
The director has come out with a typical sentiment and action plot and though the narration was neat, the presentation lacked the maturity. The script was alright but then the screenplay was shoddily executed. Also, the editing was poor at some points, on the brighter side, the dialogues were good, pace was maintained almost throughout. Music was not upto the mark but the background score was alright, camera is good in many angles and captured the moments correctly. The other departments were alright in their contribution. Gopichand has surely improved as an actor and his dialogue delivery during certain intense scenes and his expressions really heat up the atmosphere. On the other hand, the screen is set on fire with the oomph of Anushka and her cute looks. She has gone down a lot but still her facial glow exists. Poonam Kaur looked okay and not that attractive. Manoj K Jayan was good with his role while Ajay did not have anything significant. Ali was a major attraction with his share of comedy and then there was Krishna Bhagawan and Raghu Babu who really brought out the best in laughter. The others did their bit with equal value and contributed to the movie.
Conclusion:
The plot has been mixed with loads of violence, shades of romance and good sentiment angle. However, while the first half was more on the lighter side with ample comedy, romance tracks and fight sequences it is the second half that takes a serious turn and is filled with sentiment, melodrama. There were few unwanted songs too which created a break in the rhythm of the movie. Commercially, it is upto the brim and has all the elements but the arrangement of the sequences was slight haphazard. But it will make its money without an issue since the mass appeal is high.

IT to bounce back soon: Gartner

Software firms that were banking on a revival in the second half of the fiscal can take some cheer from the words of Gartner’s top man in India.

Partha Iyengar, who heads the India arm of the global research organisation, says the collapse of Lehman and other financial giants will not significantly worsen the slowdown for software firms and a revival could be in the offing before the fiscal end.

“Software firms are already in a slowdown. I don’t see that trajectory changing because of the events of last week. The December quarter will follow the quarter we are in currently. We will start seeing an uptake after the US elections. The sentiment will start to shift after that and software companies may recoup some of the losses they made in the earlier quarter in the fourth quarter,” Iyengar, vice-president, Gartner India, told ET.

Contrary to the gloom inspired by the fresh bout of bad news, his outlook for FY09 remains ‘cautiously optimistic’ and that for FY10 ‘fairly optimistic’ with growth returning to earlier levels. Iyengar said there were big differences across the key IT markets.

There was a higher level of uncertainty and close to a sense of panic among IT buyers in the US and UK (because of its proximity to US). But companies in Asia-Pacific, while being cautious, were going ahead with their IT projects. The sentiment among European buyers fell somewhere between Asia Pacific and US buyers, he said.

Since the events of last week, the BSE-IT index has lost 167 points over worries dogging some of the largest customers of Indian IT companies. Merrill is one of the top financial services clients for number one software exporter Tata Consultancy Services, while Wipro and HCL Tech have exposure to Lehman.

On Monday, outsourcing firm eClerx Services Ltd, which went public less than year ago, said it had outstanding receivables of $1 million from Lehman. The collapsed investment bank was one of its top five clients, accounting for about 13 per cent of revenues.

However, Iyengar said some of the consolidation among large financial services players such as Bank of America’s acquisition of Merrill Lynch and Lloyd TSB’s takeover of HBOS would provide huge integration opportunities for IT firms.

“It’s true, there will be some redundancies and IT vendor consolidation but they will take time to play out. The bigger issue will be the integration opportunity it creates in the near-term, integration is the biggest single issue for banks,” he said.

The most significant difference between the last slowdown in 2001-02 and the current one was the ‘incredible amount of credibility’ Indian firms have built. Gartner is also advising IT firms not go back on job offers they have already made and not cut too deep to the bone when they rationalise recruitment.

“Resources (people) tend to have fairly long memories, and when the company gets back to hire-mode, you don’t want it to have negative impact,” he added.

Google phone faces uphill battle

Google Inc's announcement last year that it would give away software that could run cell phones was met by dizzy accolades from analysts who thought it would let the search engine company conquer the world of mobile advertising.

T-Mobile USA is set to reveal the first phone to use Android, Google's software platform, at a New York news conference. But a lot has happened in the world of cell phone software in the intervening year, and Google looks set for an uphill battle in trying to capture the desires of consumers and wireless carriers.

Research firm Strategy Analytics estimates that T-Mobile could sell 400,000 phones this year, giving Google about 4 percent of the US market for "smart" phones, a category dominated by Research in Motion Ltd's BlackBerry phones with tough competition from Apple Inc's iPhone, Palm Inc's Treos and Centros and various phones running Microsoft Corp's Windows Mobile software.

The new phone, called the G1 according to T-Mobile's invitation, is widely expected to be a design from HTC Corp of Taiwan, which has made a name for itself by making smart phones that use Windows Mobile software. Based on previous Google demos of its software, it's assumed that it will have a touch screen and a slide-out, full-alphabet keyboard.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week, citing unnamed sources that the phone would sell for $199 and carry the Google brand. It's likely that the phone will go on sale in a few weeks. Other details are scant, and it's not clear exactly what the phone will be capable of, but Web browsing and e-mail are safe bets.

"This is the right moment for Google to answer some of the big questions that have been outstanding since Android was announced almost a year ago," said Morgan Gillis, executive director of the LiMo Foundation, which has created a rival cell phone software platform. "What will the consumer do on this handset that can't be done on other handsets?"

The LiMo Foundation is behind one of the developments that has undermined the prospects for Android in the last year. In May, Verizon Wireless said LiMo, or Linux Mobile, would be the "preferred" software for its phones, starting next year, joining some European carriers.

Like Android, LiMo is based on Linux computer software, and is given away free to phone makers. But the LiMo Foundation is designed as consortium of industry participants to assuage their fears that a single company would dominate phone software, like Microsoft does on PCs. In contrast, while Google has tried to broaden its base by creating an Open Handset Alliance, Android is still very much identified as its project, and a "Google" brand on the phone will strengthen that image.

The world's largest supplier of software for smart phones is Symbian Ltd., used by Nokia Corp. In June, Nokia announced it was buying Symbian with a view to donating the software to a LiMo-like foundation, which will make it available for free.

That means there will soon be not one but two suites of software with strong industry support and a price tag of zero to compete with Android when manufacturers pick operating systems. When it comes to getting carriers interested in Android, Google has an advantage its competitors lack: a world-beating advertising system that turned it into a multibillion-dollar company in the space of a few years. If Android can translate Google's success in Web advertising to the phone, carriers could get a cut of the revenue.

Wireless operators have been looking for more than a decade at making the cell phone an welcoming place for advertisers, said In-Stat analyst Bill Hughes. In particular, they want to make use of the ability of cell phones to locate their users and provide ads keyed to that location.

But the carriers "are not really set up, structurally or by temperament, to pursue that," Hughes said. "So it's basically remained: `This is a really good idea that we're going to get to some day.'"

Now, he added, Google "can come to them and say `Look, we've proven ourselves to be very successful in this application." By building an operating system from the ground up with this idea in mind, it could succeed where others have failed.

That prospect boosted Google's stock to its highest level ever, $747.24, on Nov. 7 last year, the day after Android was announced. Analyst Sandeep Aggarwal, then with Oppenheimer & Co., predicted then that Google could be harvesting as much as $4.8 billion in annual revenue from the mobile market within three years after Android appears. He put a 12-month price target of $850 on Google stock. But time has deflated some of the hopes around Android, and Google shares closed Monday at $430.14.

Among US carriers, Sprint Nextel Corp has apparently taken the bait along with T-Mobile, and is a member of the Open Handset Alliance. Verizon Wireless has not ruled out Android phones, but is putting its energy into LiMo. AT&T is holding off on making decisions about Android. "We will look at it and see if it makes sense for our customers," said AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel.

Now, TCS postpones promotions

It seems the financial turmoil sweeping the global markets has finally started hitting the Indian software industry. After a number of murmurs about impending job cuts delayed letters across top tech companies, the country's No. 1 IT services company Tata Consultancy Services has delayed promotions.

Sources told Indiatimes Infotech that in a message on the company's internal website on Monday, the company's global HR head and vice president Ajoy Mukherjee, communicated the company's decision to employees.

According to the note, Mukherjee has said that "considering the recent upheavals in the US financial markets that had global impact on the financial sector, we feel it would be prudent to wait for clarity in the business environment before we take a decision on promotions. As a result, the promotions will not be effected in second quarter this year."

However, the company communique added that TCS had completed the assessment process of selecting the individuals eligible for promotions, but was holding back promotions in view of the "current business environment which remains challenging and is expected to remain so for the near future."

When contacted by Indiatimes Infotech for their version of the news, the company's PR representative said that the company's spokesmen are traveling hence cannot be contacted.

But sources told Indiatimes Infotech that the process for most employees had been finished way back itself, and they had actually been expecting the good news for the past few weeks. The letters, they pointed out, had been given out by this time last year.

The catastrophic events overtaking global financial majors are expected to dent the revenues of Indian outsourcing companies, both in terms of the expected business and contracts they have already undertaken. Many of the affected investment banks are expected to pull out of some of their outsourcing contracts.

Analysts are of the opinion that TCS is likely to be hardest hit by the US financial crisis because of its significant exposure to Merrill Lynch, which analysts say ranks among top five financial services clients.
Incidentally, according to some recent media reports, TCS is also gearing up for another round of layoffs. The company also plans to discourage employees from staying on bench for more than two months at any of its centres.

The company had also fired close to 500 employees at the end of its annual appraisal cycle earlier this year, citing poor performance after its annual appraisal. It was also among the very first companies to announce a cut in the employee variable pay across the board.

The company which sees some project delays this quarter, but no cancellations, terms this as an employee utilisation exercise. The process will involve counselling employees and training them, according to the company executives. Employees would be asked to undertake projects on which they have never worked, and will have to update their skills.

Recently, TCS had also retrenched 15 employees from its Australian subsidiary. Last month too, the company had shown door to some 25 employees from its Kolkata and Bangalore centers, though it was done for a different reason as they were found to be fudging CVs.

HP to shut down VoodooPC?

The internet media is abuzz with rumour that Hewlett-Packard is shutting down VoodooPC, the gaming PC company which it bought two years ago.

According to Techgage, an internal e-mail circulated in HP, noting that the company was laying off some of the Voodoo employees. Though the exact number of employees to be laid off is still not clear.

VoodooPC has reportedly been returning product to its suppliers, such as Topower, their provider of power supplies. Also, two of VoodooPC's products -- the Omen desktop and Envy notebook -- have not been performing well in the market in terms of sales.

It is also not clear what will the shutdown of VoodooPC mean for the production of HP computers that comprise Voodoo DNA -- like HP Blackbird 002.

In July, HP announced that it was rolling Voodoo brand into its Personal Systems Group, its business unit in charge of making all consumer PCs.

What Google Chrome has that IE doesn’t

Google's Web browser Chrome is fast, has a clean interface and some snazzy features that other browsers do not have.

Does that mean you should download it right now and spend the time to learn it? If you like new technology, the answer is "sure".

But if you need to be assured of some payoff in new technology before you invest time in it, you might rightly want some questions answered before you switch. Here are a few.

The company line is that today's Web browsers -- Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox chief among them -- were built at a time when most of what people did on the Web were view static pages.

Now, Google says, folks want to do all sorts of things on the Web: play games, balance their cheque books, upload and watch elaborate multimedia presentations, even compose documents or create spreadsheets. The major Web browsers, Google's management and developers say, have been slow to keep pace with what users are demanding of the Internet.

Google's answer to this was to create a brand new Web browser built from the ground up using the latest technologies and technological innovations. And the goal was to build this new browser as an open source model.

This means that developers from around the world will have access to the inner workings of the code so that add-ons, extensions, and improvements can be made by the worldwide community of developers. Google believes that with this platform, developers will be able to build the next-generation of Web applications.

Holding the reins of this initiative, of course, gives Google tremendous power should the browser come to dominate, and there's clearly plenty of ways the company can exploit that for its own purposes.

Chrome, for example, was built in part to handle the JavaScript programming language better than current browsers do.
Google's own online office programmes -- dubbed Google docs -- use JavaScript heavily, and these programmes may one day be in direct competition with Microsoft's lucrative Office platform.

Chrome is different in quite a few ways. It looks different, first of all. The interface is virtually bereft of the clutter that accompanies other browsers. There's no menu bar in Chrome, nor is there a tool bar or status bar.

The content area of the browser is larger than that of any other browser you've likely seen. Expand the browser to full screen, and websites essentially fill most of your desktop.

The area occupied by the address bar in other browsers -- the place you can type or see the URL or Web address of the page you're viewing -- acts as a search field in Chrome. So you don't specifically need to visit a search engine site to conduct a search.

Once you land on a Web page, however, the Web address is shown in the same area where you conducted the search. To customise the browser, you click a wrench icon to the right of the address bar. A page icon appears just before the wrench icon. Click that, and you will see a drop-down menu with all of the page-level options, including launching a new tab, searching, zooming, and printing.

Chrome launches faster than IE or Firefox. Performance while you're working with particular websites seems about the same.

On the downside, Chrome's bookmark feature is not nearly as robust as either IE's or Firefox's -- there doesn't even appear to be a way to access the bookmarks using the keyboard alone.

Chrome, like Firefox, also allows Flash-heavy pages, such as those on YouTube, to consume a significant amount of processing power, slowing your overall system performance. The upcoming version of IE -- version 8 -- is much better in this regard.

SC wants law to protect owners from squatters

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will bring cheers to those who have lost their house or land to squatters. On Tuesday, the court said it wanted a change in the law that gives ownership rights to the one who has usurped a property by squatting by taking advantage of the fact that the owners were have had little time to inquire about their property.

Terming the ousting of real owners from their property by squatters as a serious human rights violation, a Bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and H S Bedi has requested the Centre to take a fresh look and suitably amend the land laws that recognise "adverse possession" as a means to acquire title over a property by ousting the real owners.

The apex court was at loss to understand how the law could place a premium on dishonesty by legitimising possession of a trespasser and compelling the real owner to lose his title simply because the owner has not taken back his house or land within a stipulated time.

"There is an urgent need of fresh look regarding the law on adverse possession. We recommend the Union
of India to seriously consider and make suitable changes in the law of adverse possession,” said the Bench rushing a copy of its judgment to the law ministry and legislative department for appropriate steps in accordance with law.

The case that prompted the court to do so related to a real owner losing out his title to a squatter. The Bench — despite the existing law — restored the property to the real owner, saying the trespasser had miserably failed to establish his title over it and said it was a pity that law recognised "adverse possession" as a means to take over property from a non-alert owner.

Writing the judgment for the Bench, Justice Bhandari said: "The law of adverse possession which ousts an owner on the basis of inaction within limitation is irrational, illogical and wholly disproportionate...The law as it exists is extremely harsh for the true owners and a windfall for a dishonest person who had illegally taken possession of the property of the true owner."

The concern of the court was that law, which is meant to do justice, could not be seen to benefit a person "who in a clandestine manner takes possession of the property of the owner in contravention of the law."

Though right to property has been deleted from the list of fundamental rights and has been reduced to the status of a mere legal right, the apex court termed it as an important human right.

"The right to property is now considered to be not only a constitutional right or statutory right but also a human right," the Bench said, while observing that claim of adverse possession had to be dealt with keeping in mind this important right.

Senate panel clears N-deal as PM lands in US

WASHINGTON: A US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday approved the US-India Nuclear Agreement by a 19-2 margin even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in NEW YORK, providing a glimmer of hope that the deal would be consummated by the time he visits Washington DC on Thursday.

The Senate panel appended agreement for consideration at its business meeting on Tuesday at the very last minute, adding it as item no.9 in its mark-up list. It was not immediately clear who were the two lawmakers who voted against it, but at the SFRC hearing last week, Senators Barbara Boxer of California and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin took the strongest stand against the deal.

Action is now awaited on the House side.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in New York even as President Bush began a major re-casting of the war on terror by moving the focus from Iraq to Pakistan-Afghanistan in the waning days of his presidency, while at the same time battling a financial conflagration that threatens to engulf the world.

The twin crisis has put the much-awaited US-India nuclear deal on the backburner as Washington, euphemism for the US administration, has momentarily moved to New York, and is seized with more urgent priorities that also affect India.

Among them is the new American resolve to get a handle on Pakistan, which will require New Delhi's cooperation and inputs given India's influential position and stakes in the region, particularly in Afghanistan. A more active Indian role in the region, including additional inputs in Afghanistan, is slated for discussion when Prime Minister Singh meets Bush in the White House on September 25.

Bush met Pakistan's newly-elected, but already embattled, leader Asif Ali Zardari in New York first-up on Tuesday even as the White House began a major re-appraisal of its policy in the region, spurred by the horrendous bombing of the Marriott in Islamabad.

The usual bromides about Pakistan being an ally in the war on terror was essayed by both leaders, but fundamentally, the White House appears to be correcting its policy of extreme dependency on Pakistan's military and intelligence, which have now been assessed as being unreliable and treacherous, public affirmation about cooperation notwithstanding.

In remarks that followed their meeting, Bush indicated that Zardari had brought up the issue of US incursions into Pakistan in a strong way, but offered no assurance that it would end.

"Your words have been very strong about Pakistan's sovereign right and sovereign duty to protect your country, and the United States wants to help," Bush said, remaining non-committal on the hot-button issue.

From all accounts though, Washington now wants to strengthen the hands of Pakistan's civilian government, make the country's military subservient to it as it happens in most democracies, and purge the ISI of rogue elements and subversive orientation. Pakistan's civilian leadership has seen the need for US intervention in areas that it has no control over, but the country's military generals, who have used the lawless regions as staging ground for jihad, are the ones resenting the US intrusion and putting pressure on the civilian leadership to make it an issue.

INDIA will be drawn into giving its take on the whole issue when the two sides have bilateral exchanges in Washington later this week, even as the conclusion of the nuclear deal, which remained on top of the agenda till this weekend, is up in the air.

Singh will also meet Zardari in NEW YORK tomorrow to discuss issues ranging from terrorism to trade and commerce, now that New Delhi has gotten over its fixation with deposed military dictator Pervez Musharraf.

Meanwhile, Indian officials were hopeful that the nuclear deal would be consummated in Congress before the Prime Minister's arrival in Washington on Thursday, but were not particularly exercised about the prospect of it not happening.

"We would rather it be done correctly than done hastily," one official involved in the proceedings told TOI.

US administration officials dealing with the matter were locked in battle with Democrats over the wording of the resolution to be presented in Congress, warning them that New Delhi would not accept any riders, even if they were non-binding.

Some Democrats, primed by non-proliferation hardliners, seem determined to shaft the deal even at this late stage by using a plethora of what officials describe as "spurious" arguments, including procedural issues.

All this is happening against the backdrop of the new Surge and Splurge that is roiling the capital. The new surge refers to the sudden diversion of US troops from Iraq to Afghanistan's border, following the Bush administration acceptance of Pakistan as the ground zero of the war on terror. The splurge refers to the infusion of government capital to resolve the Wall Street crisis.

Bush, making his final speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday morning, referred to both the war on terror and the financial crisis issues, expressing his determination to overcome both.

GPHONE: Googles New Product in Mobiles

Google, the nearly $13.5 billion search engine major, is believed to be a fortnight away from the worldwide launch of its much-awaited Google Phone (Gphone) and has started talks with service providers in India for an exclusive launch on one of their networks.

Talks are believed to be taking place with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar, respectively India's first and third largest mobile telephony operators, and state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam.

Sources close to the development said a simultaneous launch across the US and Europe is expected, and announcements would be sent to media firms in India and other parts of the world. US regulatory approval, which is expected soon, is the only hurdle that Google is waiting to cross, they added. Google plans to invest $7-8 billion for its global telephony foray.

In India, it is also believed to be in talks with Indian providers to offer data and content and platforms including Instant Messaging (IM) and Search functions. However, these could not be confirmed.

A Google spokesperson said, "We don't comment on market rumour or speculation. However, Google is committed to providing users with access to the world's information, and mobile becomes more important to those efforts every day. We're collaborating with partners worldwide to bring Google search and applications to mobile users everywhere. However, we have nothing to announce at this time."

Reports of the Internet major getting into handset manufacturing as an answer to Apple's iPhone has been doing rounds in cyberspace and international media for some time. These reports suggest that Google has developed a prototype that will hit the markets in a year's time. The US-based company has neither confirmed nor denied these reports. The Wall Street Journal too had reported that Google had invested "hundreds of millions of dollars" in the project and was involved in discussions with US-based T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.

Globally, Google is likely to participate in the upcoming auction for 700 MHz spectrum for which it is prepared to spend up to $4.6 billion. The firm is also introducing ads to YouTube videos which could be replicated on mobile phones. Ironically, Google recently partnered Apple to produce services such as e-mail and maps for its iPhone handset. And Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive, said recently that more Google services for the iPhone would be rolled out.

The most important news is just heard before few hours is that the world's first number search engine announced to launch Gphone. There is a rumor about the Gphone is that Google launch new mobile phone but fact is that Gphone is not a mobile phone it's just mobile powerful software.

Reports online store is a handset production in response to Apple's iPhone has made rounds in cyberspace and international media for some time. These reports indicate that Google has developed a prototype, which is printed on the market after one year. The U.S. company has not confirmed or denied these reports. The Wall Street Journal was also reported that Google had invested "hundreds of millions of dollars in the project and was involved in discussions with the United States-based T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.

Google's first Android-powered 'GPhone' could be announced at a New York press event as soon as Sept. 23, Reuters reports, citing the usual "people familiar with the matter." Read more at wiki pages..
